There’s been a lot of press about how Barbie and all the Kens regularly did Reformer Pilates sessions to get in and stay in shape for the film, but do you know what Reformer Pilates is?
Whilst the name itself may make you think it’s for those who misbehave in a mat Pilates class, the Reformer is one of the most adaptable and effective pieces of exercise apparatus available. It is a low frame with a sliding carriage on which you lie, sit, kneel, or stand to perform a wide range of Pilates exercises. A series of springs connected to the carriage and frame are adjusted to provide support or increase resistance or introduce instability. Very quickly exercises can be modified to be easier or harder by adding or removing a spring meaning it’s easy to match the level you’re working at, whether a complete beginner to Pilates or someone who’s had more practice.
Back to Barbie, the trainer did an interview discussing what he had them doing, this included: core engagement; upper body work; upper back stabilising; side splits and skating to target the thighs and bum; feet in straps spine series and stretches. So, a bit of everything, which is the beauty of the Reformer. A whole-body workout whilst targeting the areas you feel you need to focus on.

The thing is, you don’t need to be a ‘Barbie’ or a ‘Ken’ to enjoy and benefit from Pilates.
